Files and transfers

Browse and edit files on a connected server, transfer them in the background, and keep a local and remote folder in sync.

The file browser

Open the file panel for a connected session to browse the server over SFTP. From there you can:

• Browse with a path bar, a search filter and an up-one-level button
• Upload files or Upload folder from a native picker, or drag files and folders straight in from your desktop
• Download a file or a whole folder to a location you choose
• Rename or move (F2) - type a new name, or a path like ../archive/, to move the item in the same step
• Permissions - a checkbox grid for owner, group and others, or type the octal value directly
• New folder and new file
• Delete (Del), with a confirmation
• Insert path in terminal and copy path

Double-click a file, or choose Edit, to open it in Synapse's own editor rather than downloading it to open elsewhere.

Editing a remote file

The remote editor opens as a tabbed panel you can dock to either side, float as its own window, or maximise. Each open file gets:

• Diff - compare your unsaved edits against the version on disk, side by side
• Ask AI to review - sends the file to Relay for feedback
• Run - types the right command for the file's language (node, python3, bash, php...) into that session's terminal
• Save (Ctrl+S), with an unsaved-changes indicator and a confirmation before closing a dirty tab

New scratch file creates a temporary file under /tmp on the remote host, handy for a quick test without cluttering a project folder.

Transfers

Every upload, download and sync runs through one transfer queue, shown in a status button that appears in the header whenever something is moving. Open it to see, per transfer, its direction, progress, speed and file count, with:

• Pause and resume
• Retry a failed or cancelled transfer - it continues from where it stopped if it had already started writing
• Cancel an active transfer
• Clear finished to tidy up completed entries in one click

A setting for how many transfers run at the same time (1 to 6, three by default) trades off speed against how much you want a single large transfer to dominate the connection. There's no size limit on a single file.

Folder sync

The Folder sync service adds a side-by-side view of a local folder and a folder on the server, for keeping the two in step without dragging files one at a time. Switch it on in Services, then open Folder sync… from the file browser's menu.

1. Pick a local folder and a remote folder.
2. Compare them - by size and modification time by default, or turn on checksum comparison for files that match in size but might still differ.
3. Choose a direction:
   • Upload - copy new and changed files to the server
   • Download - copy new and changed files to this computer
   • Mirror to server - make the server folder match this computer, deleting extra files there
   • Mirror here - make the local folder match the server, deleting extra files here
4. Review the checklist of changes - each row shows why it's included (new, newer here, older on the server, different, or a file/folder conflict) and its size, with a checkbox to leave any of them out.
5. Mirroring shows a separate list of exactly what will be deleted before it deletes anything.

Synapse remembers the last local and remote folder you paired for each host, so repeat syncs are one click.
